TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Where do I start?

Listed below are the trainings that are “required basic trainings” for Girl Scout troop/group leaders. There are no fees for these basic training courses.

  • Orientation
  • Basic Leader Training Part A Home Study
  • Basic Leader Training Part B Activity Class
  • Explore the Outdoors Home Study
  • Make New Friends Activity Class

STEP 1
Orientation (must be taken before all other trainings)

Orientation is required for new volunteers and is the first step toward earning the Leadership Development Pin. Orientation is arranged and given by designated service unit team members. Topics include: The Girl Scout Program and who Makes It Happen, Forms to make your Life Easier and other volunteer information. This New Leader Orientation must be taken before all other trainings. Please contact a member of your service team to schedule an orientation.

STEP 2
Basic Leader Training Part A- Home Study

Prerequisite: Orientation

An easy to follow workbook and study packet guides you through the basics of Girl Scouting. This course is designed to be taken home at orientation. It may also be completed in a group setting (for example at the Service Unit Level). Your completed workbook is your ticket to into the BLT-B Activity class.

STEP 3
Basic Leader Training Part B- Activity Class

Prerequisite: Orientation and BLT-A- Home Study

A fun and interactive course gives hands-on experience and information on age level (Daisy, Brownie/Junior or Teen Advisor Cadette/Senior) Girl Scout badgework, recognition, ceremonies, and age level troop government. Please bring: BLT-A Home Study Booklet, Age level Leaders Guide, Safety-Wise and note taking material. This is a great opportunity to learn from the veteran trainers and each other! Be sure to register for your level.

STEP 4
Level 1 Outdoor Training ~ Explore the Outdoors- Home Study Course

Prerequisite: Orientation (unless taken as the Troop Outdoor Trained Adult)

This is the first level of outdoor training, and designed to teach adults how to prepare girls to be comfortable exploring outside of their meeting site. Emphasis is on safety, progression in outdoor experiences, and familiarity with Safety-Wise and the Girl Scouts of Erie Shores Program Center Sites Manual. Receive this home study workbook at the completion of the BLT-B class or from your Service Unit Director. Level 1 Certificates will be mailed when course answer sheets are received by training department.

STEP 5
Make New Friends – Activity Class

Pre-requisite: Orientation, BLT-A and BLT-B

Self worth, valuing differences, conflict management, and more are addressed through round table discussions, games and role-play activities that teach these values. Receive a booklet full of ideas to bring home and use with your troop!
